Tour of the Clam-Gallas Palace

■ You will visit the piano nobile (noble floor) in the western wing and a winter garden in the northern wing of the palace. During the tour, you will be able to admire the uniquely well-preserved structure of the palace with remarkable decorations and get acquainted with the later interior rearrangements made for the comfortable life of a noble family.

■ You will take a majestic ceremonial staircase to the 2nd floor, where you can appreciate not only the way the builder, Fischer from Erlach, dealt with the building density in the Old Town but also the sculptures, stuccos, and paintings by excellent artists from the first third of the 18th century.

■ The tour of the piano nobile begins with an antecamera (antechamber), which was rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century to serve as the palace theatre. The following Golden and Turquoise Rooms will catch your attention because of their many restored furnishings, be it a tiled stove, crystal chandeliers, or impressive ironwork on the door.

■ The Marble Room will astonish you not only by its open space and whiteness but also by a secret surprise, same as the Chinese Lounge right next to it.

■ The tour will conclude in two rooms that were adapted to a winter garden in the first third of the 19th century. If the weather is nice, the tour ends at the courtyard, where you can admire the size of the palace.

The tour is not wheelchair accessible. Along the tour, you climb the ceremonial staircase (76 steps), pass through the palace halls (about 110 m) and at the end you descend the staircase again (64 steps). Visitors with reduced mobility can book an assistant, with whom they take the lift and join the tour at the top of the ceremonial staircase. Address for booking: CGP@muzeumprahy.cz.

“Clam-Gallas Palac is one of the prime works of Prague Baroque architecture, it is a splendid example of historical housing and the lifestyle of then aristocrats.”

History of the Clam-Gallas Palace

The palace is situated on a large construction site comprised of a four-wing Baroque building around the central square courtyard. In the axis of Karlova Street, it is connected with the entrance tower-shaped avant-corps, the staircase tower near the north-eastern corner, and the eatern wing near the rear wings of houses that constitute the western front of Malé (Small) Square.
